We, the undersigned, are a group of concerned citizens who understand the formation of a new borough is being considered. After much discussion of the issue we collectively decided to write and send this letter for the benefit of the community-at-large. We would like to determine the impact this would have on District 7 and our current Matanuska-Susitna Borough.
To this end, we propose the formation of a committee of interested citizens comprised of citizens living in the area to objectively study the impact of such a decision. We would like you to be a part of it.
Because of the significance of such a decision, the committee will thoroughly research the following areas:
- Financial feasibility
- Community projects
- Education system
Part of the committee’s mission is to research these areas and publicly report our findings on a continuous basis. The committee will also be charged with reviewing the process by which borough formation is accomplished. An exploratory meeting will be held in the near future and we are seeking representatives from all community councils, community service areas, and any other interested organizations to participate.
Participants will be responsible for gathering questions from their respective community councils, presenting information in public forums, and reaching out to those who reside outside of designated community council areas. The aim is to provide organized research and clarification about the results of forming a new borough. As community representatives of your area, you are critical to understanding the potential pros and cons of a new borough.
Furthermore, the committee will also hold district-wide meetings to inform those who would be impacted by a new borough formation. We will also be available to attend community council meetings to discuss the merits of the issue. Our goal is to gather information on the concerns of citizens living within District 7 in the Matanuska- Susitna Borough and ultimately, to propose a solution. Our hope is that you will join us to accomplish this task.
For those of you on social media, there is an active Facebook page called “Upper Susitna Borough” that has been established. With nearly six hundred members at present, anyone interested can join the page to find out more details.
